The purpose of this module is to provide learners with an understanding of the computer and its environment. It covers basic terminology associated with computer hardware and software. It provides practical experience in data entry skills, word processing, file management and the use of the internet.
Learners who successfully complete this module will:
-Understand the terminology associated with computer hardware and software.
-Acquire the essential skills to operate a computer -Develop the skills required to enter and manipulate text using a word processing package.
-Acquire the skills needed to use the Internet

Who And What Is FETAC?
FETAC, the Further Education and Training Awards Council is the single national body responsible for awards and standards in the further education and training sector in Ireland. FETAC has specific responsibility for providing a range of awards on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ) for students from levels 1-6.
How Does a FETAC Award Compare to The Junior Certificate And The Leaving Certificate?
Level 3 is the same level as the Junior Certificate.
Level 4 and Level 5 are at the same level as the Leaving Certificate, with Level 5 being recognized more as a Post Leaving Certificate standard.
The A-1 Computer centre offers students sitting for Major Awards the opportunity to apply for recognition of prior learning.
Can I Gain Credit for Subjects Taken at Junior or Leaving Certificate?
Candidates sitting for full awards may apply for credits for subjects taken in the Junior Certificate and/or Leaving Certificate and/or through other recognised educational providers.
Module Credits for Other Certification at Level 4:
Credits are awarded at FETAC Level 4 for achievement in specific subjects in the Leaving Certificate.
To qualify for the award of the FETAC Level 4 a candidate must be successful in a minimum of four FETAC modules, and four others.
The latter may include Leaving Certificate subjects and the ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence).
Assessment & Certification:
FETAC - Evaluation takes place before, during and after training.
All assessment is carried out in accordance with FETAC regulations.
Assessment is devised by the internal assessor, with external moderation by FETAC.

Written Multiple Choice Questions - 20% of overall award
Assignment 2 Typing Test
Data Entry/Keyboard Copy Test - 20% of overall award
Assignment 3 Introduction to Word Processing
Practical assessment using OpenOffice.org wordprocessor software - - 20% of overall award
Assignment 4 Introduction to the Internet
Practical assessment using Browser and Email - - 20% of overall award
Assignment 5 Introduction to File Management
Practical assessment using Windows XP - - 20% of overall award
All assessments must adhere strictly to the performance criteria as outlined in the individual candidate marking sheets supplied.
A 50% mark is the minimimum required to pass a test

Grading:
Pass: 50 - 64%, Merit: 65 - 79%, Distinction: 80 - 100%
